the Parks Department management collected up the remaining
bottles of wine and left.
At the level of adrenaline we had all been operating under,
there was no chance whatever of that. Looking around, Alan saw
the entire staff of Special Projects putting on their coats. “Where
do you think you're going?” he asked, and we told him. I was last
out, and from the top of the stairs, Alan called after us, “You do
realize this may result in disciplinary action…”
“Get your coat, Alan,” I shouted back, “and close the building!”
Meanwhile, in the George Hotel, John was coping with the
disbelief of the ground crew. “But you had dinner with the C.O.
last week!” We had noticed that the officers and ratings had kept
far apart at the reception, but still didn't appreciate the total class
separation of ranks in H. M. forces at that time. “Listen,” said
John, “in a moment that door will open and in will come Duncan
Lunan, Gavin Roberts and the rest of the happy multitude…” And
right on cue we did.
From there and a succession of other bars I went off to do
more and more interviews with the press and media. My wife
came with me to the last one, which was with Radio Clyde in the
early evening, and went so well that afterwards I had a monthly
radio spot there for the next 18 months. As we were heading back
to rejoin the gang in the pub, Linda said to me, “That was your last
interview today, wasn't it?” When I confirmed that, she said, “In
that case, I have something to tell you. I haven't told you till now,
because you'd have been so big-headed with it you'd have been
insufferable.
You know when Archie Thom went up the hill to join you? I
was left with Professor Thom in the Range Rover, surrounded
by children cheering like mad every time the helicopter came
over with another stone. We didn't talk much, but when Dr.
Thom came sliding back down in the kilt, in the snow and
the mud, the Professor said, 'Can you imagine Glyn Daniel
doing that?' And when Archie Thom got back into the car, the
first thing the Professor said to him was, 'Don't you wish Glyn
Daniel was here to see this?'
