Lift' (Fig. 7.24 ), Norman is with Jimmy, the foreman of the park
contractors, Sportsworks. Unknown to me, Jimmy had bet him that
the Navy couldn't fly the seven stones in 35 min, and a large sum of
money was passing from him to Norman now that they had.
After a short speech by Councilor Logan, Scottish Television
conducted an equally short interview with me - it was very cold
up there by that time. The BBC then conducted a longer one, in
which unfortunately they ran out of film before the last question,
which they considered very important, about why building the cir-
cle was worthwhile. I had to hold my position for what seemed like
an eternity while they went for more film and reloaded, and, not
surprisingly, people told me afterwards that my last reply lacked
the conviction of the earlier ones. But it was good that everyone
else had gone to the reception, and I was left to walk back to Buch-
anan Street alone. I really needed a few minutes to take in what
had been achieved.
There was a pleasant development at the reception. We had
now been joined on the project by John Braithwaite's father Bill, late
