date. Dr. Thom said that hopefully the project would draw attention
to the need to preserve the ancient sites as a cultural heritage.
Interruptions during the day continued without respite. Three
times, I had to break off and go over the hill to the Sportsworks
site office, because a messenger had arrived telling the crew to
stop work - 'person or persons unknown' had called to say the
helicopter operation had been canceled. If they had stopped work,
it would have had to be cancelled because the foundations would
not have been ready. Each time, I asked Jimmy and his team to
continue, handed over to Gavin, went to the telephone and wasted
an hour confirming that the operation was still on.
When I got back to the site the southwest arc was done
(Fig. 7.10 ), and I took over for the final northwest one. For some
reasons those stones were particularly difficult to place, possibly
