borrowing). The prehistoric circle was at a site called 'Knappers'
in Clydebank, not Drumchapel, but with obvious flint-working
connotations. It was a major tourist attraction in the 1930s and
was visited by 40,000 people in 1938 [ 10 ].
A full-size replica of its central portion was erected at the
San Francisco exposition (Fig. 5.7 ). It lay between the launching
site of the Queen Mary , where the river Clyde bends to the north,
and the Boulevard, the extension of Great Western Road that runs
