April 27. It was clear that he had mental pictures of the skyline of
every park in the city, and once I had explained my objectives, he
went to work on a large photocopied map to mark the possibilities.
There were more of them than one might suppose. As the Lord
Provost is quick to point out in relation to the proposed devolu-
tion of government agencies, or potential industrial development,
Glasgow is one of the few cities whose design allows one to reach
open country by car in 20 min or less, in almost any direction, and
you can see out of it .
The city has kept to the river valley, not encroaching on
the natural skyline of the Campsie Fells in the north, nor on the
Southern Boundary Fault, yet it is itself on the lower hills of gla-
cial drumlins. The Jobs Creation projects were housed in what had
been the booking office of Buchanan Street station, once the city's
rail terminus for the north, and only yards away from the junction
with Bath Street - about as central as one can get. But the line of
