F IG . 5.4 ( a ) Standing stone at Kintraw, Argyllshire, from the 'observing platform'
on the hillside, where the midwinter Sun set in the notch between the peaks
of Jura. A stone directly uphill marks where another observer could give warn-
ing of the coming event (Photo by Euan MacKie; detail in MacKie, E., “The
Megalith Builders”, 1977). ( b ) The standing stone and notch at Kintraw from
the stone platform on the hillside. After dismissing Euan MacKie's theodolite
survey as 'a sketch,' a later critic claimed that MacKie's photograph was taken
from northwest of this spot [ 8 ]. Readers may compare that photograph with
mine and reach their own conclusion (Photo by the author, June 1978)
