Canoeing & Kayaking
Victoria's waterways offer ample opportunities for paddling in a canoe or kayak. Mel-
bourne's Yarra River is a great place to start, whether around Docklands and Melbourne's
city centre or along the river's gentle lower reaches. See Click here for details.
The Glenelg River ( Click here ) , in western Victoria on the South Australian border, is a
great place for multiday trips. The river works its way through deep gorges with stunning
riverside wildflowers and birdlife. Best of all, it has special riverside camp sites en route,
many of which are only accessible by canoe.
Apollo Bay, along the Great Ocean Road, is popular for short sea-kayaking trips.
Out in the east, kayaking and/or canoeing is possible around Wilsons Promontory, Port
Albert, Lakes Entrance and Croajingolong National Park. Also in the east, white-water raft-
ing down the river in Snowy River National Park could just be the most fun you can have
on water.
Canoe hire costs from $40 to $75 per day, depending on the operator. Extra expenses
may include equipment delivery and pick-up.
