Walking
Victoria is classic bushwalking country, with countless trails leading out into the wilder-
ness. Most trails can be found in the eastern half of the state, especially in Gippsland and
the High Country, but there are some fine hikes elsewhere as well. For a serious, long-dis-
tance undertaking, the Australian Alps Walking Track is world-class, beginning in Wal-
halla, crossing the roof of Australia and finishing close to Canberra. Our favourite Victori-
an hikes include the following:
» Great Ocean Road Several wonderfully long walks that can be done as an entire leg or in separate sections.
» High Country Try Baw Baw National Park, Mt Hotham, Mt Beauty and Mt Buffalo.
» Wilsons Promontory National Park A wonderful interweaving of marked trails, stunning scenery and lovely camping
spots.
» Grampians National Park More than 150km of well-marked walking tracks that pass towering waterfalls and sacred
Aboriginal rock-art sites.
» Croajingolong National Park Near Mallacoota in East Gippsland, this national park offers rugged inland treks and
easier coastal walks.
