In-Depth Information
secluded farmhouse, restored miner's cottage or beachside bungalow. In the English tradition, a big cooked breakfast is
part of the deal. Rates are usually midrange (from $80 to $180 for a double) but can be much higher depending on the
location and level of luxury. In many places, a minimum two-night stay is required, and not only during peak periods -
this is almost always the case on weekends, especially in places like Daylesford.

Hotels & Motels
Motels are the most common type of accommodation around the state and popular with travellers looking for central,
no-frills, familiar accommodation. Motels usually have studios and family apartments from $100 to $200, with TV, en
suite bathroom, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making facilities and usually a pool and barbecue area.
In Melbourne and large provincial centres, hotels are usually aimed at business and luxury travellers - centrally loc-
ated, with business centres and restaurants attached. For a standard double room in a top-end hotel, expect to pay up-
wards of $250, midrange around $150 and for budget doubles from $90.
In country towns, a hotel refers to the local pub, which may have refurbished rooms upstairs, usually with shared fa-
cilities down the hall. These are often a good budget option, with rooms under $90, and you're sure to rub shoulders
with a few locals down in the bar.
Apartments & Holiday Rental Accommodation
Most common along the coast and at ski resorts and popular spots like the Grampians and Murray River, holiday accom-
modation is generally self-contained, with kitchen, one or two bedrooms and parking. Holiday houses along the coast
are usually just that - an entire house that you can rent for a week or longer and is ideal for families or groups.

Houseboats
One of the great ways to stay in Victoria is on a houseboat. They range from basic two-bedroom boats with a small kit-
chen and the simplicity of a rural cabin to luxurious 12-berth craft with deck spa and all mod cons. They're especially
popular in Mildura, Echuca, Eildon, Mallacoota and around Nelson and the Lower Glenelg National Park.
