NAGAMBIE
In the Goulburn Valley just west of the Hume Fwy, Nagambie inhabits the shores of pretty Lake Nagambie - it's
a popular centre for water sports and sky-diving. For the latter try Skydive Nagambie ( 1800 266 500,
03-5794 2626; www.skydivenagambie.com ; 52 Kettles Rd; tandem dives $299-399) . The surrounding area is
known for its horse studs - superstar horse Black Caviar was born here - and wineries.
Two of Victoria's best wineries are just south of town: Mitchelton Wines ( 03-5736 2222;
www.mitchelton.com.au ; 470 Mitchellstown Rd; 10am-5pm), with an art gallery and award-winning shiraz;
and Tahbilk Winery ( 03-5794 2555; www.tahbilk.com.au ; 254 O'Neils Rd; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri,
10am-5pm Sat & Sun), which began in 1860 and claims to be the oldest winery and vineyard in Victoria. Tahbilk
opens onto the Wetlands & Wildlife Reserve (admission by donation, wetlands cruise $5; 11am-4pm Thu-
Mon), with boardwalks and boat tours through a natural area rich in bird life. Entry is via the excellent Wetlands
Café (mains $18-36; 11am-4pm Thu-Mon) .

Getting There & Away
Chiltern is 290km northeast of Melbourne and lies just off the Hume Fwy (M31).
Up to three bus or train V/Line ( 1800 800 007; www.vline.com.au ) services run from Mel-
bourne's Southern Cross Station to Chiltern ($31, 3¼ hours).

Benalla

Just off the Hume Fwy, 212km north of Melbourne, Benalla is an important regional
centre, although you won't need much more than an hour to take in its sights.
