NORTHEAST VICTORIA
TOP OF CHAPTER
Rutherglen
POP 2500
Rutherglen combines some marvellous gold rush-era buildings (gold was discovered here
in 1860) with northern Victoria's most celebrated winemaking tradition. The town itself has
all the essential ingredients that merit a stopover, among them a great pie shop, antique
dealers and a labyrinthine second-hand bookshop. It all adds up to an engaging destination
in its own right and a good base for exploring the Murray's Victorian hinterland.
Sights & Activities
First up should be the Rutherglen Wine Experience ( Click here ), with a wine-tasting room
where you can sample local fortifieds, book tours and hire bikes ($25/35 per half-/full day).
The visitor centre at the Wine Experience provides maps and touring information for cyc-
ling tours around the region, including the Rutherglen-Wahguynah extension to the Murray to
Mountains Rail Trail ( Click here ) .
Tours
There are lots of ways to get out to the wineries without driving or cycling yourself, includ-
ing chauffeured limousine tours. The visitor centre has a full list.
