Beechworth
POP 2789
Beechworth's historic honey-coloured granite buildings and wonderful gourmet offerings
make this one of northeast Victoria's most enjoyable towns. It's also listed by the National
Trust as one of Victoria's two 'notable' towns (the other is Maldon), and you'll soon see
why: this living legacy of the gold-rush era will take you back to the days of miners and
bushrangers - Ned Kelly was tried here for the murder of three Mansfield policemen.
Most of the town spreads along two intersecting streets - Ford and Camp Sts - where
you'll find old-fashioned shops and some of the best food stores, cafes and restaurants in
the region.
Sights & Activities
Historic Precinct
Beechworth's main attraction is the group of well-preserved, honey-tinged buildings that
make up the Historic & Cultural Precinct ( 1300 366 321; ticket for all sites plus 2 guided tours adult/child/
family $25/15/50; 9am-5pm) - if you're going to visit more than a couple of the museums, it's
worth buying the combined ticket. First is the Town Hall , where you'll find the visitors centre
and the free Echoes of History audiovisual tour. Across the road is the Beechworth Courthouse
(adult/child/family $8/5/16; 9.30am-5pm) , where the trials of many key historical figures took
place, including those of Ned Kelly and his mother; their cells can still be seen. Behind the
courthouse is the Old Police Station Museum (admission $2; 10am-2pm Fri-Sun) . You can send a tele-
gram to anywhere in the world from the Telegraph Station on Ford St, the original Morse-code
office. Walk through to Loch St to the Burke Museum (adult/child/family $8/5/16; 10am-5pm) ,
which is named after the hapless explorer Robert O'Hara Burke, who was Beechworth's
superintendent of police before he set off on his historic trek north with William Wills.
