Adobe Mudbrick Flats

labour of love for Margaret and Peter Kurz, these unique mudbrick flats in Karbeethong
are something special. With an emphasis on recycling and ecofriendliness, the flats have
solar hot water and guests are encouraged to compost their kitchen scraps. Birds, lizards
and possums can be hand-fed outside your door. The whimsical apartments are comfort-
able, well equipped and cheap. A real find.
COTTAGE $$
Gabo Island Lighthouse

experience head out to stay at this remote lighthouse. Accommodation is available in the
three-bedroom assistant lighthouse keeper's residence. Watch for migrating whales in au-
tumn and late spring. Pods of dolphins, and seals basking on the rocks are also regular
sightings. There's a two-night minimum stay, and a ballot for use during the Christmas
and Easter holidays.
Karbeethong Lodge

overcome by a sense of serenity as you rest on the broad verandahs of this early 1900s
timber guesthouse, which gives uninterrupted views over Mallacoota Inlet. The large
guest lounge and dining room have an open fire and period furnishings, and there's a
mammoth kitchen if you want to prepare meals. The pastel-toned bedrooms are small but
neat and tastefully decorated.

Mallacoota Wilderness Houseboats

weekly from $1200) These six-berth houseboats are not as luxurious as the ones you'll find on
the Murray, but they are the perfect way to explore Mallacoota's waterways, and they are
economical for a group or family.
