Lakes Entrance
POP 5970
With the shallow Cunninghame Arm waterway separating town from the crashing ocean
beaches, Lakes Entrance basks in an undeniably pretty location, but in holiday season it's
a packed-out tourist town with a graceless strip of motels, caravan parks, minigolf courses
and souvenir shops lining the Esplanade. Still, the bobbing fishing boats, fresh seafood,
endless beaches and cruises out to Metung and Wyanga Park Winery should win you over.
There's plenty here for families and kids, and out of season there's an unhurried pace and
accommodation bargains.
The town is named for the channel, artificially created in 1889 to provide ocean access
from the lakes system and create a harbour for fishing boats.
