In-Depth Information
Ninety Mile Beach
To paraphrase the immortal words of Crocodile Dundee: that's not a beach… this is a
beach. Isolated Ninety Mile Beach is a narrow strip of sand backed by dunes, featuring la-
goons and stretching unbroken for more or less 90 miles (150km) from near McLoughlins
Beach to the channel at Lakes Entrance. It's arguably Australia's longest single beach.
The area is great for surf fishing, camping and long beach walks, though the crashing surf
can be dangerous for swimming, except where patrolled at Seaspray, Woodside Beach and
Lakes Entrance.
Between Seaspray and Lakes Entrance, the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park is a protected area
of low-lying coastal shrubs, banksias and tea trees, bursting with native wildflowers in
spring. Permits for remote camping can be obtained from Parks Victoria (
13 19 63;
www.parkweb.vic.gov.au ) .
The main access road to Ninety Mile Beach is the South Gippsland Hwy from Sale or
Foster, turning off to Seaspray, Golden Beach and Loch Sport.

Seaspray
You'll think you've travelled back to the 1950s at this low-key, low-rise seaside village of
prefab houses. It gets busy during the summer holidays but otherwise it's a quiet place
with just a few shops, a cafe, holiday accommodation and a near- deserted beach.
Northeast of Seaspray are a string of superb free Parks Victoria camping grounds, just
back from the dunes and with beach access. Camp sites include the Honeysuckles,
Flamingo Beach, Golden Beach and Paradise Beach. They're hugely popular in summer
and during holiday weekends, but at other times you can just drive straight in. Some sites
have barbecues and pit toilets, but you need to bring your own water and firewood. Hot
showers are available at Golden Beach ($2).
