Fish Creek
POP 790
For years travellers in the know have been stopping for a bite to eat at Fish Creek on their
way to the coast or the Prom. These days it has developed into a little bohemian artists
community with craft shops, galleries, studios, bookshops and some great cafes. The
Great Southern Rail Trail passes through.
GREAT SOUTHERN
RAIL TRAIL
This 58km cycling and walking path ( www.railtrails.org.au ) follows the old rail line from Leongatha to Foster,
passing through the villages of Koonwarra, Meeniyan, Buffalo and Fish Creek, where you can stop and refuel.
The trail meanders through farmland with a few gentle hills, trestle bridges and occasional views of the coast and
Wilsons Prom. The first section from Leongatha to Koonwarra is through the rolling open country of the region's
dairy farms. The middle section from Koonwarra to Meeniyan and on to Foster is the most scenic section of the
route, with plenty of bridges, eucalypt forests and fine views.
Celia Rosser Gallery ( 03-5683 2628; www.celiarossergallery.com.au ; Promontory Rd; 10am-4pm Fri-Sun)
is a bright art space featuring the works of renowned botanical artist Celia Rosser
and various visiting artists. The attached Banksia Café has a sunny deck.
The art deco Fish Creek Hotel ( 03-5683 2416; www.fishcreekhotel.com.au ; Old Waratah Rd; mains
$16-30; noon-2pm & 6-9pm) , universally known as the Fishy Pub (but also called the
Promontory Gate Hotel), is an essential stop for a beer or bistro meal, and there's motel
accommodation at the back.
Fish Creek lies along the Korumburra-Foster bus line with at least three departures
daily. By road, follow the signs off the South Gippsland Hwy at Foster (13km) or Meeniy-
an (28km).
