Flinders
POP 622
Flinders, where the thrashing ocean beaches give way to Western Port Bay, has so far
been largely spared the development of the Port Phillip Bay towns. It's a delightful com-
munity and home to a busy fishing fleet. Surfers have been coming to Flinders for dec-
ades, drawn by ocean-side breaks such as Gunnery, Big Left and Cyril's, and golfers know
the cliff-top Flinders Golf Club course as the most scenic and wind blown in Victoria.
The historic Flinders Hotel ( 03-5989 0201; www.flindershotel.com.au ; cnr Cook & Wood Sts; d $225-500;
) has been a beacon on this sleepy street corner longer than anyone can remember.
Modern motel units are well equipped. For meals there's the indoor- outdoor Deck Bar Bistro
(mains $18-36; noon-3pm & 5.30-9pm) where pub grub goes gastronomic - nothing too fussy,
just staple dishes such as steak and parma done really well - or the celebrated fine-dining
experience of Terminus (2-/3-course meal $69/89;
6-10pm Fri, noon-2.30pm & 6-10pm Sat, noon-2.30pm
Sun) .
