Sorrento
POP 1448
Historic Sorrento is the standout town on the Mornington Peninsula for its beautiful lime-
stone buildings, ocean and bay beaches, and buzzing seaside summer atmosphere. This
was the site of Victoria's first official European settlement, established by an expedition of
convicts, marines, civil officers and free settlers who arrived from England in 1803.
Sorrento boasts some of the best cafes and restaurants on the peninsula, and the main
street is lined with galleries, boutiques, and craft and antique shops - naturally, it gets ri-
diculously busy in summer. Dolphin swims and cruises are popular, and the trip to
Queenscliff on the ferry is a fun outing. The small Sorrento visitor centre (
03-5984 5678; 2 St
10am-4pm) is on the main street.
