Maryborough
POP 7180
Maryborough is part of central Victoria's 'Golden Triangle', where prospectors still turn
up a nugget or two. The town's pride and joy is the magnificent railway station, and now
that passenger trains are running here again from Melbourne it's worth a day trip.
Sights & Activities
Maryborough
Railway Station
( 03-5461 4683; www.stationantiques.com.au ; 38 Victoria St; 10am-5pm) The town boasts
plenty of impressive Victorian-era buildings, but Maryborough Railway Station leaves
them all for dead. Built in 1892, the inordinately large station, complete with clock tower,
was described by Mark Twain as 'a train station with a town attached'. Today it houses a
mammoth antique emporium, a regional wine centre and an excellent cafe. An antique fair
is held here three times a year.
HISTORIC BUILDING
Worsley Cottage
( 03-5461 2518; www.vicnet.net.au/~mbhs ; 3 Palmerston St; adult/child $5/1; 10am-noon Tue & Thu, 2-4pm
