magnificent old Castlemaine Market, a building fronted with a classical Roman-basilica
facade complete with a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of the harvest, on top.
Getting There & Away
V/Line ( 13 61 96) trains run hourly between Melbourne and Castlemaine (from $14.20, 1½
hours) and continue on to Bendigo ($4.20).

Around Castlemaine
About 10km northwest of Castlemaine, the Harcourt region (bypassed by the new Calder
Fwy) is known as Victoria's 'apple centre', but in recent years it has also developed as an
excellent mini-wine centre, an extension of the Bendigo wine region (for which the Cas-
tlemaine Visitors Centre can provide a map and a list of cellar doors). Check out Bress (
