Fri, noon-5pm Sat & Sun) A superb art deco building houses this gallery, which features colonial
and contemporary Australian art, including work by well-known Australian artists such as
Frederick McCubbin and Russell Drysdale. The museum, in the basement, provides an in-
sight into local history, with costumes, china and gold-mining relics.

10am-5pm Sun) Home to a Hungarian silversmith and his family for 120 years, Buda has per-
manent displays of the family's extensive art and craft collections, furnishings and person-
al belongings. There's an interesting mix of architectural styles: the original Indian-villa
influence, and later Edwardian-style extensions dating from 1861.
Castlemaine Botanic Gardens
These majestic gardens, some of the oldest in Victoria (established 1860), strike a perfect
balance between sculpture and wild bush among beautiful National Trust-registered trees
and the artificial Lake Joanna.

Hadfield's Rod Museum

rods and custom cars, take a trip out to the shop about 7km east of town in Chewton. The
big green shed contains around 20 custom-built vehicles and drag racers. Call ahead to
check it's open.
MUSEUM
Victorian Goldfields Railway
( 03-5470 6658; www.vgr.com.au ; adult/child return $35/15) This historic steam train heads through
the box-ironbark forests of Victoria's gold country, running between Castlemaine and
Maldon up to three times a week.
