Castlemaine has a number of interesting historic buildings, including the Roman basilica
facade of the old Castlemaine Market OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (1862) on Mostyn St; the
Theatre Royal (1856; Click here ) on Hargreaves St; the post office (1894); and the original
courthouse building (1851) on Goldsmith Cres. For a good view over town, head up to the
Burke & Wills Monument OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP on Wills St (follow Lyttleton St east of the
centre). Robert O'Hara Burke was a police superintendent in Castlemaine before his fate-
ful trek.
