former town hall (1863), has an interesting museum detailing Portland's colonial past. Cus-
toms House (1850) has a fascinating display of confiscated booty, including a stuffed black
bear.
Also here is the 1845 courthouse , the 1886 RocketShed with a display of ship rescue equip-
ment, and the 1889 battery built as defence against feared Russian invasion.
Portland Cable Tram

12.30pm & 1.45pm) This restored 1886 cable tram (now diesel-powered) does four trips a day,
plying a 7.4km circular route on a track laid in 2002. It links the vintage-car museum (
03-5523 5795; cnr Glenelg & Percy Sts; adult/child $6/1; 10am-4pm) , botanic gardens, Maritime Dis-
covery Centre and WWII memorial water tower. Hop on and off as you please.

wrecks, Portland's whaling history, a sperm whale skeleton that washed ashore, and an
original 1858 wooden lifeboat.
Historic Walking Tours
The tourist office offers several self-guided walking tours, including a heritage building
tour and one that traces the steps of St Mary MacKillop's time in Portland.
