focuses on rustic French provincial cooking, with 90% of the produce sourced from her

RedBeard Historic Bakery

lane off the main strip, RedBeard is owned by brothers with more than 25 years' baking
experience, and is famous for its sourdough breads baked in a huge 19th-century wood-
fired Scotch oven. They also do good breakfasts. While RedBeard was for sale at the time
of research, it's expected to continue as is.

cafe/general store specialises in local produce and wines. Its back patio has lovely forest
views.

The Cosmopolitan

noon-late Fri-Sun) The historic Cosmo recently reopened (after it was destroyed by fire in
2005), pleasing many waiting locals. Cosy up by the open fire with a local beer or cider
under pressed-metal ceilings. In summer, the huge beer garden beckons.

This pleasant town 13km from Mt Macedon is easily reached by train from Melbourne
(70km away) and makes a popular base for road cyclists and mountain-bikers exploring
the Macedon Ranges. It's also the gateway to Hanging Rock and the wineries in the re-
gion.
