POP DAYLESFORD 3073, HEPBURN SPRINGS 601
Set among the scenic hills, lakes and forests of the Central Highlands, Daylesford and Hep-
burn Springs form the 'spa centre of Victoria', a fabulous year-round destination where you
can soak away your troubles and sip wine by the fireside. The health-giving properties of
the area's mineral springs were first claimed back in the 1870s, attracting droves of fash-
ionable Melburnians. The well-preserved and restored buildings show the prosperity of
these towns, as well as the lasting influence of the many Swiss-Italian miners who came to
work the tunnel mines in the surrounding hills.
These days, the Daylesford region is one of Victoria's favourite boutique weekend get-
aways - even if you don't indulge in a spa treatment, there are plenty of great walks, a fab-
ulous foodie scene and remnants of an arty, alternative vibe. The local population is a blend
of hippies and old-timers, and there's also a thriving gay and lesbian scene here. During the
week some businesses close so it's best to visit Thursday to Sunday.
