Marysville
POP 520
Spread across a valley between Narbethong and Lake Mountain, Marysville was at the
epicentre of the tragic 2009 bushfires ( Click here ) , during which most of the town's build-
ings were destroyed and 34 people lost their lives. The town's tight-knit community is
steadily and courageously rebuilding; a huge hotel conference complex is due for comple-
tion in 2014.
Marysville was a private mountain retreat as far back as 1863, and by the 1920s was
known as Melbourne's honeymoon capital. Today it's still the main base for the cross-
country ski fields at Lake Mountain and is reached via a beautiful drive over the Black
Spur from Healesville; look out for lyrebirds on the way.
Sights & Activities
There are a number of great walking trails around town. Pick up maps and info from the
visitor centre.
