In-Depth Information
The myki card can be topped up at 7-Eleven stores, myki machines at most train sta-
tions and at some tram stops in the city centre; frustratingly, online top-ups take at least 24
hours to process. For Zone 1, which is all that most travellers will need, costs $3.50 for
two hours, or $7 for the day. Machines don't always issue change, so bring exact money.
The fine for travelling without a valid myki card is $212 - ticket inspectors are vigilant
and unforgiving.
TAXI
Melbourne's taxis are metered and require an estimated prepaid fare when hailed between
10pm and 5am. You may need to pay more or get a refund depending on the final fare.
Toll charges are added to fares. Two of the largest taxi companies are Silver Top (
131 008;
www.silvertop.com.au ) and 13 Cabs (
13 22 27; www.13cabs.com.au ) .
