A hideaway
bar in a city alleyway, Bar Americano is a standing-room-only affair with black-and-white
chequered floors complemented with classic 'do not spit' subway tiled walls and a subtle
air of speakeasy. By day it serves excellent coffee but after dark it's all about the cock-
tails; they don't come cheap but they do come superb.

One of the city's most
sophisticated bars, Lui offers the chance to sample the views and excellent bar snacks
(smoked ocean trout jerky!) without having to indulge in the whole Vue de Monde dining
experience. Suits and jet-setters cram in most nights so get there early (nicely dressed),
claim your table and order drinks from the 'pop-up book' menu containing serious drinks
like macadamia martinis - vacuum distilled at the bar.

Melbourne's own Betty Ford's (the place you go when there's nowhere left to go), the
Supper Club is open very late and is a favoured after-work spot for performers and hospit-
ality types. It's entered via an unsigned wooden door, where you can leave your coat be-
fore cosying into a chesterfield. Browse the encyclopaedic wine menu and relax; the som-
meliers will cater to any liquid desire.
It does good bar food too, including old-school party pies. The upstairs bar
