Greenhouse has a fun vibe and is extremely well run - they know
what keeps backpackers content. This includes: free wi-fi, free rooftop barbecues, huge
communal spaces, luggage storage and activities. There's also chatty, helpful staff and
spic-and-span facilities. It's a five-minute walk from Flinders St Station.

ers a total makeover, with all new fittings in its clean rooms, basement bar and modern
kitchen. It's inside a historic building (c 1910) right in the heart of the action, opposite
Flinders St Station, with 24-hour reception, helpful staff and free wi-fi.

the open-plan lobby at reception can be a tad overwhelming with its hive of backpackers
cooking away and socialising at the cafeteria-style tables, the well-appointed rooms are
away from the madness and in good condition. There are free pancakes for breakfast, and
it's a handy location for the Queen Vic Market and city sightseeing.

In a stylish art deco building across from the Queen Vic Market, this grungy hostel
won't suit those looking for modern digs, but rather it's a character-filled backpackers
painted in vibrant yellow and reds. Reception is rarely attended, so pre-arrange your ar-
rival. Guests get free entry to gigs at the next door Public Bar.
There are a few branches in the area, but this is the only recommendable one.
