GARDENS
( 03-9209 6777; www.portphillip.vic.gov.au ; cnr Blessington & Tennyson Sts, St Kilda; sunrise-sunset;
96) Taking pride of place on the southern line of the Barkly, Carlisle and Blessington St tri-
angle, the Botanical Gardens are an unexpected haven from the St Kilda hustle. Wide
gravel paths invite a leisurely stroll, and there are plenty of shady spots to sprawl on the
open lawns. There are local indigenous plants and a subtropical rainforest conservatory to
ponder.
Jewish Holocaust Centre
( 03-9528 1985; www.jhc.org.au ; 13-15 Selwyn St, Elsternwick; by donation; 10am-4pm Mon-Thu, to 2pm Fri,
noon-4pm Sun; 67, Elsternwick) Dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews
who lost their lives during the Holocaust, this well-presented museum was set up by sur-
vivors as a sobering reminder of the atrocities they endured. Guided tours are available,
often led by Holocaust survivors themselves.
MUSEUM
Elwood Beach
(Ormond Esplanade, Elwood; 606) A short drive or concerted foreshore walk will take you to
this swimming beach. It tends to be less windswept, though often no less crowded, than St
Kilda, and is surrounded by leafy Elwood Park and Point Ormond Reserve. There are
playgrounds and kiosks. To get here take bus 606 from St Kilda at the corner of Park and
Fitzroy Sts.
BEACH
Monash University Museum of Art
(MUMA; www.monash.edu.au/muma/ ; 900 Dandenong Rd, Caulfield East; 10am-5pm Tue-Fri, noon-5pm Sat;
3, Caulfield) Established during the 1960s, MUMA's art collection has more than
1800 artworks, and they're a great representation of Australian contemporary art.
