The vector grid was merged with the raster land cover data within a Geographic
Information System (GIS) environment. Each pixel in the land cover classification
dataset was assigned a unique identifier (Element1_Class1, Element1_Class2, etc.)
within the GIS environment for input into the FRAGSTATS software. The metric
results were then averaged over each 1 km 2 grid element for comparison to the MODIS
data using linear regression analysis. The large areal extent of the grid made it
