get to downtown Helsinki on tram #9 (leaves from right outside the door, zips
you to the train station downtown) or by taxi (about €15).
By Cruise Ship: Cruises arrive at any of four different terminals in Hel-
sinki; for all the details, see the end of this chapter.
By Train and Bus: The train station, an architectural landmark, is near
the top of the Esplanade, a 15-minute walk from Market Square. Local buses
leave from both sides of the building, trams stop out front, and the Metro runs
underneath. The long-distance bus station is two blocks (or one tram stop)
away, on the other side of Mannerheimintie; the ticket office and machines are
on the ground floor, with bus platforms below.
By Plane: Helsinki Airport is about 10 miles north of the city (airport
code: HEL, www.helsinki-vantaa.fi ) . To get between the airport and down-
town Helsinki, take the Finnair bus (€6.20, leaves for airport from platform
30 at Elielinaukio on west side of train station, 3/hour, 35-minute trip,
www.finnair.com ; stops at some downtown hotels on request) or public bus
#615 (€4.50, pay driver, not covered by transit tickets or Helsinki Card, leaves
for airport from platform 3 at Rautatientori on east side of train station, 3-6/
hour, 45-minute trip, also stops at Hakaniemi). Or take the Yellow Line door-
to-door shared van service (€29 for 1-2 people, €45 for 3-4 people, €60 for
