In-Depth Information
Kalmar Art Museum (Kalmar Konstmuseum) —Completed in 2008, this
bold museum building caused quite a stir in Kalmar, both for its expense and
for the way it faces down the fanciful medieval/Renaissance castle with a jolt
of staid modernity. Its interior, with clean concrete spaces, is ideal for show-
ing off constantly changing exhibits of modern and contemporary art. Some
rooms provide fine views back on the castle. If the exhibits advertised appeal
to you—or if you're an art-lover intrigued by the space—it's worth a visit.
Cost and Hours: 50 kr, Tue-Sun 12:00-17:00, Wed until 19:00, closed
Mon, Stadsparken, tel. 0480/426-282, www.kalmarkonstmuseum.se .
Eating: Attached to the museum—and complementing its style, though
it was built some 70 years earlier—is the recommended Byttan restaurant.
This is a good spot for a meal or a drink, with cozy indoor—or castle-view
outdoor—seating.
• Our walk is finished. The castle is easy to visit from here. If you have
time for a long walk (or a bike or car ride), consider exploring the coastline
beyond (southwest of) Kalmar Castle, lined with more parks and inviting
beaches. About a mile after the castle is the charming little seafront commu-
nity of Stensö, with its own pocket-size harbor, charming fishing cottages,
and (another half-mile farther) a lightly forested island with a popular camp-
ground (open April-Oct, www.stensocamping.se ).
