Eating in Växjö
After-hours Växjö is not very exciting. Consider livening things up by dining
out.
PM is a trendy eatery where a younger crowd stands in line to see and be
seen. They have good international cuisine with Swedish flair, a mod black-
and-white interior, and nice outdoor tables on the pedestrian mall (110-kr
lunch special, 150-190-kr starters, 160-270-kr main dishes, 375-kr three-
course dinners, Mon-Sat 11:30-23:00, often later Fri-Sat, closed Sun, Stor-
gatan 24 at corner of Västergatan, tel. 0470/700-444).
Lagerlunden, the elegant, glassed-in restaurant at the recommended Elite
Stadshotell, has dinner specials for 150-250 kr (Tue-Sat 18:00-24:00, closed
Sun-Mon, Kungsgatan 6, tel. 0470/13400).
Ethnic Options: If you're looking to save money, or if it's a
Sunday—when other restaurants are closed—visit one of downtown Växjö's
dozen or so Asian restaurants and kebab-and-pizza shops. Of these, Ali
Baba's is a cut above, with a glitzy, Lebanese-casino vibe and a fun stalactite
ceiling (60-100-kr meals, Mon-Thu 10:00-22:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-late, Sun
12:30-22:00, Sandgärdsgatan 10, tel. 0470/27900). La Gondola, serving
Swedish, Chinese, Thai, and Greek food, is simple and engagingly multina-
tional, and offers seating indoors and out (80-90-kr lunch buffet, 40-65-kr
starters, 105-160-kr main dishes, Mon 12:00-15:00, Tue-Wed 11:00-21:00,
Thu11:00-15:00&19:00-20:00,Fri-Sun12:00-22:00,Storgatan33,tel.0470/
27632).
Groceries: Visit the ICA supermarket at the corner of Sandgärdsgatan
and Klostergatan, one block from the front of the train station (Mon-Sat
8:00-20:00, Sun 11:00-20:00). Coop/Konsum is farther away, but bigger and
open later (daily 7:00-23:00, about a 7-minute walk left of the train station at
Oxtorget 8—look for large parking lot).
