In-Depth Information
Near Stockholm: Uppsala
Uppsala is a compact city with a cathedral and university that win Sweden's
“oldest/largest/tallest”awards.Ifyou'renottravelinganywhereelseinSweden
other than Stockholm, Uppsala makes a pleasant day trip. But if you're short
on time, Uppsala is not worth sacrificing time in Stockholm or a boat trip
through the archipelago. If you visit, allow the better part of a day, including
the trip out and back. During summer vacations, this university town is very
quiet.
Getting There: Take the train from Stockholm's central station (1-3/hour,
40 minutes, 80 kr, buy tickets at ticket windows). Since the Uppsala station has
lockers and is in the same direction from Stockholm as the airport, you could
combine a quick visit here with an early arrival or late departure.

Tourist Information
The helpful TI, overlooking the canal through the heart of town, has free maps
and the informative What's On Uppsala magazine (Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat

Arrival in Uppsala
From the train station (lockers-20-30 kr), walk straight out the front door, cross
the busy street, and walk two blocks. Turn right along the newly pedestrian-
ized shopping street called Kungsängsgatan. Walk three more blocks (passing
the Åhléns department store, with its handy Hemköp grocery downstairs) and
you'll run into the town's main square, Stora Torget. From here, you can turn
left and cross the canal. The TI is just to the right after the canal, and you can
see the cathedral spires (which also mark the university zone) just behind it.
