Sea. If you cruise to Finland, you'll get a good dose of this island beauty.
Otherwise, consider one of many half- or full-day trips from downtown
Stockholm to the archipelago. Hopping the local ferries to visit an island or
two and see the lazy comings and goings of the island vacationers makes for
a great day. For all the details, see the next chapter.
Shopping in Stockholm
Sweden offers a world of shopping temptations. Nordiska Kompaniet (NK,
short for “no kronor left”), Stockholm's topend department store, is located
in an elegant early 20th-century building that dominates the far end of Kung-
strädgården. If it feels like an old-time American department store, that's be-
cause its architect was inspired by grand stores he'd seen in the US (circa
1910). The Swedish design section (downstairs) and the kitchenware section
are particularly impressive.
The classy Gallerian mall is just up the street from NK and stretches se-
ductively nearly to Sergels Torg. The Åhléns store, nearby at Sergels Torg, is
less expensive than NK and has two cafeterias and a supermarket. Fashion-
forward H&M is right across the street. Drottninggatan is a long pedestrian
boulevard lined with shops.
