Visiting Skansen:
Skansen was the first in what became a Europe-wide
movementtopreservetraditionalarchitectureinopen-airmuseums.Otherlan-
guages have even borrowed the Swedish term “Skansen” (which originally
meant “the Fort”) to describe an “open-air museum.” Today, tourists still ex-
plore this Swedish-culture-on-a-lazy-Susan, seeing folk crafts in action and
wonderfully furnished old interiors. While it's lively June through August be-
fore about 17:00, at other times of the year it can seem pretty dead; consider
skipping it if you're here off-season.
