Helpful Hints
Theft Alert: Even in Stockholm, when there are crowds, there are pickpock-
ets (such as at the Royal Palace during the Changing of the Guard). Too-
young-to-arrest teens—many from Eastern Europe—are hard for local po-
lice to control.
Emergency Assistance: In case of an emergency, dial 112.
Medical Help: For around-the-clock medical advice, call 08/320-100, then
press 2 to get into the queue. The C. W. Scheele 24-hour pharmacy is near
the train station at Klarabergsgatan 64 (tel. 08/454-8130).
Telephone Calls: For operator assistance, call 118-118. Numbers starting
with 020 are toll-free. Numbers beginning with 070 and 073 are mobile
phones—about triple the cost of a regular call. Some kiosks sell cheap in-
ternational phone cards; look for shops serving Sweden's immigrant pop-
ulation (1 kr/minute calls to the US).
Internet Access: Some 7-Eleven stores and Pressbyrån newsstands host
“Sidewalk Express” Internet terminals. These are the best deal going. Just
buy a card (29 kr/1.5 hours), remember your password, and you can pop
into participating branches to log on. The card is shareable (but only one
person at a time can use it) and valid for three days from your first log-in
(branches open daily until late). There's a Sidewalk Express nook at the T-
