In-Depth Information
Going at the right time helps avoid crowds. This topic offers tips on the
best times to see specific sights. Try visiting popular sights very early or very
late. Evening visits are usually peaceful, with fewer crowds. When possible,

other things if you have the time and stamina.

them before your visit.
At Sights
Here's what you can typically expect:
Some important sights require you to check daypacks and coats. To avoid
checking a small backpack, carry it under your arm like a purse as you enter.
Fromaguard'spointofview,abackpackisgenerally aproblem,whileapurse
is not.
Flash photography is often banned, but taking photos without a flash is
usually allowed. Flashes damage oil paintings and distract others in the room.
Even without a flash, a handheld camera will take a decent picture (or buy
postcards or posters at the museum bookstore).
Museums may have special exhibits in addition to their permanent collec-
tion. Some exhibits are included in the entry price, while others come at an
extra cost (which you may have to pay even if you don't want to see the ex-
hibit).
Expect changes—artwork can be on tour, on loan, out sick, or shifted at the
whim of the curator. To adapt, pick up any available free floor plans as you
enter, and ask museum staff if you can't find a particular item.
Many sights rent audioguides, which generally offer excellent recorded de-
scriptions in English (about $8). If you bring your own earbuds, you can enjoy
better sound and avoid holding the device to your ear. To save money, bring a
Y-jack and share one audioguide with your travel partner.
Important sights may have an on-site café or cafeteria (usually a handy
place to rejuvenate during a long visit). The WCs at sights are free and nearly
always clean.
