Variations: If you spend a night (or more) on the fjords, you have
many options other than the speedy itineraries outlined above. One popu-
lar variation is to take the express boat from Bergen to Balestrand for an
overnight, then plunge into the Nutshell the next day (or vice versa—do
the Nutshell partway, then boat to Bergen; for express boat information,
see here ) .
Eating: Options along the route aren't great—on the Nutshell I'd consider
food just as a source of nutrition and forget about fine dining. You can buy
some food on the fjord cruises (50-75-kr hot dogs, burgers, and pizza) and the
Oslo-Bergen train (50-100-kr hot meals, 150-kr daily specials). Depending on
the timing of your layovers, Myrdal, Voss, or Flåm are your best lunch-stop
options (the Myrdal and Flåm train stations have decent cafeterias, and other
eateries surround the Flåm and Voss stations)—although you won't have a lot
of time there if you're making the journey all in one day. Your best bet is to
