Oslo's One-Time Grills
Norwegians are experts at completely avoiding costly restaurants. “One-
time grills,” or engangsgrill , are the rage for locals on a budget. For about
20 kr, you get a disposable outdoor cooker consisting of an aluminum
tray, easy-to-light charcoal, and a flimsy metal grill. All that's required
is a sunny evening, a grassy park, and a group of friends. During balmy
summer evenings, the air in Oslo's city parks is thick with the smell of
disposable (and not terribly eco-friendly) grills. It's fun to see how prices
for this kind of “dining” aren't that bad in the supermarket: Norwegian
beer-12 kr/bottle, potato salad-20 kr/tub, cooked shrimp-75 kr/half kilo,
“readyforgrill”steak-twofor110kr, grill polse hotdogs-60krperdozen,
lomper (Norwegian tortillas for wrapping hot dogs)-15 kr per stack, and
the actual grill itself.
