Edvard Munch (1863-1944)
Edvard Munch (pronounced “moonk”) is Norway's most famous and in-
fluential painter. His life was rich, complex, and sad. His father was a
doctor who had a nervous breakdown. His mother and sister both died of
tuberculosis. He knew suffering. And he gave us the enduring symbol of
20th-century pain, The Scream .
He was also Norway's most forward-thinking painter, a man who
traveled extensively through Europe, soaking up the colors of the Post-
