the 15th century, but this local “Notre-Dame” is the oldest church in town.
After Christianity came to Viking Denmark in 965, a tiny wooden church
was built here. The crypt of its 11th-century stone rebuild was discovered in
1955. Four rune stones were also discovered on this site. Enter the church
around the back, and climb below the main altar into an evocative arcaded
space (c. 1060). Like the Aarhus Cathedral, the church's whitewashed walls
are covered with fine epitaph medallions with family portraits. Step through
the low door behind the rear pew (on the right with your back to the altar) into

a retirement home for lucky seniors.
