In-Depth Information
Don't miss the stairs down into the basement, where you'll find the
“Cabinet of Curiosities” —several items that belonged to H. C. While some
are ordinary (his top hat, pocket watch, pen, shaving kit, lock of hair, vest,
and so on), other items have fascinating stories to tell. The 30-foot length of
rope was an essential bit of travel gear for H. C., who went around the world;
the phobic author kept it in his hotel room so that he could escape in case of
fire. Displayed next to his actual bed is an eight-panel screen decorated with
impressively detailed sketches by H. C. himself of his travels and his friends
(executed while he was stuck in his apartment recovering from illness).
