Karen Blixen Museum
Danish writer Karen Blixen, a.k.a. Isak Dinesen of Out of Africa fame, lived
most of her life in Rungstedlund—her family house in Rungsted, on the Øre-
sund coast. The house, one of the area's finest mansions, is now a museum
aboutherlifeandwriting.ForfansofBlixen'sworks,thehouseisa▲▲sight,
thoughBlixen'sdramaticlifestoryandthehouse'sbeautifulsettingareenough
to make a visit enjoyable even for those who've never heard of Out of Africa.
Unlike manyhouses-turned-museums that file youpastroped-offdoorways,
you'll don slippers to pad through the house, mostly unchanged from the time
ofBlixen'slife.Overheadphones,listen toBlixen readselections fromherown
stories as you look out at the same views she enjoyed. She wrote her best-
known books (including Babette's Feast ) in this house, surrounded by memen-
tos of her 17 years in Kenya. Her simple grave is a short walk away through the
mansion's backyard gardens.

Getting There: From Copenhagen, take the train 30 minutes to Rungsted
Kyst (3/hour). From the station, take bus #388, or simply walk 15-20 minutes
(follow signs to the house). Rungsted is a short hop away from Humlebæk (7
minutes by train) and Helsingør (20 minutes).
