Viking Ship Hall,
check the board for the day's activities
and demonstrations (including shipbuilding, weaving, blacksmithing, and
minting). Consider buying the 20-kr guidebook, and request the 14-minute
English movie introduction.
The core of the exhibit is the remains of those five ships. These vessels
were deliberately sunk a thousand years ago to block an easy channel into
this harbor (leaving open only the most challenging approach—virtually im-
possible for anyone but a local to navigate). The ships, which are named for
the place where they were found (Skuldelev), represent an impressively wide
range of Viking shipbuilding technology.
