Rosenborg Castle and Nearby
▲▲▲Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg Slot) and Treasury —This finely fur-
nished Dutch Renaissance-style castle was built by King Christian IV in the
early 1600s as a summer residence. Rosenborg was his favorite residence and
where he chose to die. Open to the public since 1838, it houses the Danish
crown jewels and 500 years of royal knickknacks. While the old palace interi-
or is a bit dark and not as immediately impressive as many of Europe's later
Baroque masterpieces, it has a certain lived-in charm. It oozes the personality
of the fascinating Christian IV and has one of the finest treasury collections
in Europe. Notice that this is one of the only major sights in town open on
Mondays (in summer only). For more on Christian, read the sidebar on here .
