In-Depth Information
Traditional Altiplano dances celebrate war, fertility, hunting prowess, marriage and
work. After the Spanish arrived, European dances and those of the African slaves were in-
troduced, resulting in the hybrid dances that now characterize many Bolivian celebrations.
Oruro's Carnaval draws huge local and international crowds. Potosí is famed for its re-
creations of the region's tinku (ritual fighting) tradition, while La Paz is renowned for La
Morenada, which re-enacts the dance of African slaves brought to the courts of Viceroy
Felipe III.
