In-Depth Information
After a string of more than 70 presidents throughout its tumultuous history, Bolivia
elects the country's first indigenous leader, Evo Morales, who wins with nearly 54% of
the vote.
2008
Right-wing factions' opposition to Morales' renationalization of Bolivia's gas wealth
culminates in pitched street battles in Santa Cruz that leave 11 dead and more than 50
wounded.
2009
The new constitution is approved with more than 60% support, giving greater rights to
the majority indigenous population and allowing Morales to run for - and win - his
second term.
