the steam, feeding it back into the cylinder. The machine's efficiency increased
to about 5%. As the machines continued to be improved and their efficiency in-
creased, they were able to be operated far from the coal mines ( Figure 3.2 ).
At a certain point, engineers introduced speed regulators into steam engines and
the textile industry started to use them on a large scale. They were also used in rail-
way engines, giving rise to the Industrial Revolution.
